Much like Hope and Missi’s shoots, because Mara’s was partly for school I found myself putting finishing them off…for like a month. Oops. But motivation is finally finding me and I finished editing (very tediously- these were noisy as hell…how I lust after the 7D and it’s better high ISO performance) her best shots today. If I were to do these again I would DEFINITELY bring my flash into the net and shoot ISO 800 rather than 1600.

By the way, if Mara looks familiar it is because I shot her wedding last fall at the Springstep Dance Studio.

But I had a lot of fun, learned how to exit a trapeze net (the more you know) and got some pretty cool shots. Here’s four favorites. Full set here.

Why? School and life are pretty rough right now, I’m pretty down about it all but I’m still shooting! Here is proof! I have TWO shoots with Missi and one with Mara (you may remember her, formally a bride on this little blog). I did some studio time with Missi and she was kind enough to hoop for me while I took her picture. If you don’t know what hooping is, check this video out. It is a new obsession of mine and I wanted to do my final project on unconventional dancers and performers. I’m hoping to get some belly and burlesque dancers soon!

Mara is another one of my kind friends who are helping with the performers project. Mara does aerial silks. If you don’t know what that is, watch this video! I can’t do that stuff but I did manage to get in and out of the trapeze net without injuring myself or anyone else. Not bad.

Here’s a couple peeks, many more coming!

I love roller derby. I failed miserably at being a roller girl (broken tail bone, rolled ankle, shin splits…you name it) I decided to become another enthusiastic and less likely to frequent the ER fan. Send me to a bout with my camera and I’m in my glory. Oh, and there’s beer. Heaven.

First bout was Providence’s Killah Beez vs New Hampshire’s Skate Free or Die. The Beez crushed NH with 150 points to their 50. 100 point win? Pretty awesome, Beez! No wonder I was drunk by halftime.

    Some favorites:

Next up was the Providence all-star team the Rhode Island Riveters vs Detroit, sadly for the home team…Detroit cleaned up.  End score: Detroit 149, Providece 69. Some favorites:

This one hurts to look at, Crazy Dukes took a mean hit!

I’ll be at the championship bout (The Old Money Honeys vs The Rats) on September 25th, keep an eye out for pictures! For more info on Providence Roller Derby head here.

I was given the honor of taking the PRD’s annual league photo at Sunday’s game. I was really stoked to get the chance, I am a big derby fan. My buddy Christine (aka Burnin’ Helen) didn’t make the photo cause she ran late so you’ll have to imagine her awesome self in there.

The light was pretty ruthless and with only one flash, I wasn’t attempting to light this huge group but I think it came out pretty good anyway! I was nervous, it looked soft in my camera but once again my preview screen was screwing with me!

I was looking forward to shooting the bout, but 2 jams into the game the sky opened up and poured on us. The game resumed after the shower but I’d left by then, I had the baby with me and didn’t want him to be cold and damp just so his mommy could shoot pictures!

Thanks for having me, PRD! Congrats to the Old Money Honey’s on their game opener win!

For what little I shot of the bout, go here.
